Praktisk gjennomføring

This semester has been very successful. I have improved the teaching methods and material based on last year’s experience and feedback from students. 

It is difficult to teach our students topics/algorithms that require some math. Pedagogically I have adopted an example-based teaching. I start each topic with an example of a game where the topic/algorithm can be useful to solve the game problem. This gives the students a good start. Then I go through the algorithms with the example so they can see how the problem can be solved. Later they are given new problems to solve during class and after class. This reinforced their understanding. I also put out two levels of reading materials, easy and difficult. If the students read the easy ones, they can already understand how the algorithms work. If they want to go into more details on how to make changes in the algorithms, they can do the difficult readings. Those are mostly for informatics students. But from informal conversation with the students, some of them actually read the difficult readings. The results also show that the learning outcome was satisfactory. 

Strykprosent og frafall

Two students dropped out in the end because they have missed too many lectures. One was from Pakistan with visa problem; the other was sitting in the board of a student organization which took much of his time.

Metode - gjennomføring

4 out of 5 students in the course evaluated the course online. One gave oral feedback. The feedbacks are fairly good in general. All are quite satisfied with the course. None of the students have any complaints. From informal conversation, I have learned that some improvements can be made next time. For example, in addition to hand run algorithms, I can have an open source tool (WEKA) running the algorithms with data sets. So the students can see the results from large data sets.
