Objectives and Content
Objectives
The course aims to give advanced knowledge of selected technologies and measurement methods in recently conducted research and technology development in ocean technology.
Content
The course consists of a selection of modules from the following topics among others;
- Data communication in the ocean
- Advanced calculation of measurement technology
- Smart sensors
- Installation and intervention of equipment in the ocean
- Ocean based renewable energy
- Technology in fishery and aquaculture
- Oil and gas production
Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course the student should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:
Knowledge
The student
- is in the forefront of knowledge within selected topics in ocean technology
- can assess the appropriateness of using different technologies and measurement principles in ocean technology
Skills
The student
- can explain the physics of current technology and measurement principles in ocean technology, as well as explain the benefits and constraints of using these in various applications
- can substantiate the selection of a chosen technology and/ or measurement principle based on application requirements such external factors, life expectancy of the equipment, cost, safety and more
- can utilize knowledge in experimental setup ion the laboratory, and implement measurement and/or communication systems
General competence
The student
- can identify and develop new technical solutions for current challenges within ocean technology.
- can plan and execute experiments based on teamwork, and write a project report
Required Previous Knowledge
Recommended Previous Knowledge
Basic knowledge of minimum 60 ECTS in physics + course corresponding to PHYS225/HTEK201 Measurement Technology or equivalent.

Access to the Course
Access to the course requires admission to a master programme/doctoral education at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences
Teaching and learning methods
The teaching method is by lectures and seminars.
Compulsory Assignments and Attendance
Approved laboratory reports for each laboratory assignment. Approved compulsory assignments are valid for 2 subsequent semesters.
Forms of Assessment
The forms of assessment are:
- Oral exam (45 minutes) which count for 100% of the total grade.

Grading Scale
The grading scale used is A to F. Grade A is the highest passing grade in the grading scale, grade F is a fail.
Assessment Semester
Autumn semester and spring semester.
Reading List
The reading list will be available within June 1st for the autumn semester and January 1st for the spring semester.
Course Evaluation
The course will be evaluated by the students in accordance with the quality control system at UiB and the department.
