Objectives and Content
Objectives:
The course aims to provide students with broad knowledge in key professional elements of ocean technology and convey and understanding of the subject area distinctiveness and challenges.
Content:
The course consists of a selection of modules such as:
- Introduction to marine biology, marine environment and environmental changes
- Introduction to seabed geology
- Introduction to oceanography
- Introduction to hydro dynamics
- Introduction to marine acoustics, optics and measurement science
- Introduction to offshore renewable energy
- Introduction to subsea oil-and gas production
- Introduction to aquaculture technology
- Introduction to perspectives of sustainability in ocean environment
- Introduction to sea/marine law
- Information sources and reference management
Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course the student should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

- has a broad knowledge of central themes in ocean technology
- has knowledge of selected research and development work within ocean technology
- has understanding of key issues in ocean technology
Skills

- is able to apply professional knowledge on issues and make reasoned choices
- master relevant professional techniques and forms of expression and can convey key theories, issues and solutions in ocean technology
- can find, assess and refer to information and subject matter
General competence
The student
- has general knowledge of the scientific link between central themes within ocean technology
- can give an account of selected issues in ocean technology
- is familiar with and can apply relevant sources of information, including reference management

Access to the Course
Access to the course requires admission to the Integrated Master's Programme in Ocean Technology
Teaching and learning methods
The teaching method is by lectures and excursions.
Compulsory Assignments and Attendance
- Compulsory attendance (minimum 80 % of lectures)
- Compulsory reflection notes from course excursions
- Compulsory project assignment
- Compulsory quiz from selected topics
Approved compulsory assignments are valid for 2 subsequent semesters. It is compulsory for students admitted to the Integrated Master's Programme in Ocean Technology to take this course in the first semester of the programme.
Forms of Assessment
The forms of assessment are:
- Final multiple choice exam (2 hours) counting 100 % of the total grade.
Examination Support Material
Basic calculator allowed in accordance with the regulations specified by the Faculty.
Grading Scale
The grading scale used is A to F. Grade A is the highest passing grade in the grading scale, grade F is a fail.

Reading List
The reading list will be available within June 1st for the autumn semester and January 1st for the spring semester.
Course Evaluation
The course will be evaluated by the students in accordance with the quality control system at UiB and the department.
