Objectives:

The course aims to provide students with valuable and relevant practical experience through practice internship in a company or research establishment relevant for ocean technology. Students will be deployed at the host company or research establishment on fixed days of the week.

Content

In the course the students actively participate in practice placement with a host company / research establishment with work tasks that naturally belong to the study programme in ocean technology. The course provides practical understanding of typical work processes in a company / research establishment aimed at ocean technology with applications in areas such as environmental monitoring, fish/ aquaculture technology, deepsea mineral mining and oil and gas. The course gives the students opportunity to reflect on the interaction between completed educational subjects and practical professional practice within ocean technology

On completion of the course the student should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge The student

• has knowledge about the company / research establishment's character and place in society
• can explain the tasks and working methods in the company or research establishment, as well as describe the corporate culture and the roles of colleagues in the workplace

Skills

The student

• is able to familiarize her-/himself with the assigned tasks, and communicate and collaborate with work colleagues to resolve these.
• can reflect on her/his professional practice.
• can present the work conducted during the practice written and oral

General competence The student

• is able to conform to the requirements issued by the workplace
• can reflect on her/his own knowledge and learning, and reflect on her/his own role in cooperation with other
• can communicate key subject matter as theories, issues and solutions both in writing and oral, and exchange views and experiences with professionals in the field

Work practice deployment in a company/ research establishment

The practice deployment is to consist of two full workdays pr. week from the start to the end of the semester (14 weeks). This corresponds to 210 hours. In addition to this, pre-work, reporting, meetings, presentations and other necessary work related to the course will be required. A written contract between the student, the University of Bergen and company/research establishment is available. Written an oral reports should be addressed to the contact at the University of Bergen.

The compulsory teaching activities in the course include the following

• Timesheets signed by contact person in the company/ research establishmentwhich meets the minimum requirements for the number of work of practice deployment hours.

The compulsory assignments are valid for 2 subsequent semesters. Detailed guidelines and deadlines will be announced at the start of the course.

The course uses portfolio assessment.

The portfolio consists of the following parts:

• 1 reflection journals (if possible with with 1-2 pictures enclosed) during the work practice deployment.
• Final reflection journal
• Final oral presentation

All the reflection journals must be approved prior to the oral presentation of the work practice deployment. The entire folder must be approved to get the grade "passed" in the course.

Autumn and spring

The course is only given and assessed in the 2nd year of the Integrated Master's programme in Ocean Technology.
