Objectives and Content
The topic aims at providing
- General understanding of anaesthesia for surgical patients
- Overview of necessary anaesthetics and equipment to obtain general anaesthesia
- How to plan one patient for anesthesia, including preoperative considerations and risk assessments (ASA), providing anaesthesia in the operating theatre, and postoperative decisions at the end of surgery
- Overview of anaesthesia risk and patient safety
- Basic practical training in anaesthesia procedures-
Each student should follow one surgical patient from start to finish of an operation.

On completion of the course
the student should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Has basic knowledge on
How to plan for and provide anaesthesia to surgical patients
- Necessary medication and equipment to provide anaesthesia
- Patient risk assessments (ASA)
- Need for preoperative examinations and treatment
SKILLS
Has performed
A risk assessment of a patient (ASA)
- Setting up monitoring of a patient
- A venous cannulation and set up and iv infusion on a manikin and a patient
- Insertion of a laryngeal mask on manikin/seen patient-demo Intubation on manikin/seen patient-demo

Teaching Methods and Extent of Organized Teaching
The topic consists of lectures, time in operating theatres places, group work (team based and case based learning) and simulator-/manikin exercises.
Lectures (including course test).
Operating theatres.
Group work (including presentations).
Simulator-/mainkintraining exercises.
Self-studies and preparation for group work not included in the hours mentioned above.
