Objectives and Content

ENG118 builds on ENG114, ENG107 (ENG101).

 

ENG118 provides students with and offers insight into selected aspects of the structure and/or usage of English. The course will also provide students with the concepts and terminology that is required for accurate linguistic description and analysis. The content of the course will vary year to year. The course can for example include topics from morphology, syntax, English-Norwegian contrastive linguistics, language acquisition, pragmatics, language attitudes, discourse and/or conversation analysis, etc.

On completion of the course the student has the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

- will have acquired the skills necessary to extend their knowledge through further studies of linguistics at 200-level

- is skilled in expressing academic ideas in written and spoken English

Required Previous Knowledge

No formal requirements, but see Recommended previous knowledge/training.

Recommended Previous Knowledge

It is strongly advised that students, in addition to fulfilling the general admission requirements, also have good grades in specialized English courses from Upper Secondary School.

For students with a background other than the Norwegian school system, a level of competence in English corresponding to C1 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages is recommended.

It is also recommended that students have completed EXFAC00SK (Basic Linguistics), ENG100 (Introduction to English studies), ENG114 (English Grammar I) and ENG115 (English Phonetics and Phonology) or equivalent courses.

Credit Reduction due to Course Overlap

Credits cannot be awarded for ENG118 in combination with ENG106 (5 credits), ENG106L (5 credits), ENG111 (5 credits) or ENG112 (5 credits)

Access to the Course

The course is open to all with admission to the University of Bergen.

For exchange students: Applicants have to document English language proficiency to access the course. Students should hold a level of C1 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Language (CEFR). For valid tests, please see uib.no/exchange.

Teaching and learning methods

Lectures: up to 24 hours

 

Students are expected to be present and active in class. This expectation is also the basis for the preparation towards the exam.

 

In the case that fewer than five students register for a course, the organized teaching may be adapted to fit the number of students. If this occurs, students will be informed at the start of the semester, and before the registration deadline 1. February/1. September.

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance

There are no compulsory assignments, but students may write a practice exam. It is highly recommended that students do so.

Forms of Assessment

The exam is a three hour school exam.

The exam may be digital.

Examination Support Material

No aids are allowed during the exam

Grading Scale

The exam is marked in the grade scale A-F, where F is a fail.

Assessment Semester

An exam is offered each semester - the regular exam at the end of the fall semester and the re-take exam in the middle of the spring semester.

Reading List

The material covers an introduction into English language structure and/or usage.

The reading list will be available by 1 June for the Autumn semester.

Course Evaluation

The teaching is evaluated in accordance with the quality control system of the University of Bergen.

The Programme Board is responsible for the academic content and structure of the study programme, and for the quality of all the subjects therein.
