Objectives and Content

ENG107 is an advanced course of Enlighs grammar and it builds in parts on ENG114.The course will provide students deeper insights into the structure of the English language. It will also provide more advanced analytical tools for studying English grammar.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course the student should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

- will have advanced knowledge about the structure of English as well as of central concepts in morphology and syntax

- is able to use their knowledge to analyse linguistic material

- is in command of the relevant linguistics concepts and vocabulary.

 

 

General competence

Students will have acquired the skills necessary to extend their knowledge through further studies of linguistics at the 200-level.

Recommended Previous Knowledge

It is strongly advised that students, in addition to fulfilling the general admission requirements, also have good grades in specialized English courses from Upper Secondary School.

For students with a background other than the Norwegian school system, a level of competence in English corresponding to C1 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages is recommended.

It is also recommended that students have completed EXFAC00SK (Basic Linguistics), ENG100 (Introduction to English studies), and ENG101/ENG114 (English Linguistics I) or equivalent courses.

Credit Reduction due to Course Overlap

Credits cannot be awarded for both ENG107 andENG106 (5 credits), ENG106L (5 credits), ENG111 (5 credits) or ENG112 (5 credits).The number of attmenpts on the exam is three, this includes attempts in ENG106.

Access to the Course

The course is open to all students admitted to the University of Bergen.

For exchange students: Applicants have to document English language proficiency to access the course. Students should hold a level of C1 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Language (CEFR). For valid tests, please see uib.no/exchange.

Teaching and learning methods

Lectures and group seminars. Up to 36 hours.

 

In the case that fewer than five students register for a course, the organized teaching may be adapted to fit the number of students. If this occurs, students will be informed at the start of the semester, and before the registration deadline 1. February/1. September.

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance

There are no compulsory assignments, but students may write a practice exams and it is highly recommended that students do so.

Forms of Assessment

The exam is a three hour school exam.

The exam may be digital.

Examination Support Material

No aids are allowed during the exam.

Grading Scale

The grading scale A-F is used, where F is a fail.

Assessment Semester

An exam in ENG107 is offered each semester - the regular exam at the end of the fall semester and the re-take exam in the middle of the spring semester.

Reading List

The reading list covers major aspects of English grammar as mentioned in Learning Outcomes/Results.

The reading list will be available by 1 June for the Autumn semester.

Course Evaluation

The teaching is evaluated according to the quality assurance system of the University of Bergen.
