Candidates should be able to explain

• Etiologic factors of tooth and jaw position defects, have knowledge of their prevalence
• pre-and postnatal growth of head and jaws and methods to determinate growth rate and direction and how growth can be affected by orthodontic treatment
• Occlusion development and diagnosis of eruption anomalies
• The need, indication for orthodontic treatment, when and how various types of malocclusions should be treated
• The principles of orthodontic treatment at various ages, the mechanisms and effects of the fixed, removable and functional orthodontic appliances
• The biological reactions of orthodontic tooth movement, adverse effects, and stability of the treatment
• Principles for the correction of tooth and jaw position defects in interdisciplinary treatment
• The most common malformations of the face and jaws and the principles of the treatment of cleft lip, and palate.

Skills

The candidate must be able to

• Carry out clinical investigations necessary to diagnose growth, eruption and occlusal anomalies at various ages
• Assess the need and timing of orthodontic treatment
• Inform patients and parents or guardians about the need (or no need) for orthodontic treatment, what the treatment involves and its risks and risk factors for side effects
• Refer patients with treatment needs to an orthodontic specialists and communicate and collaborate with the specialist about treatment.
• Inform patients about the social security benefits associated with orthodontic treatment
• Prevent the development of local teeth defects and initiate treatment to break habits that have diverse effects on the development of the occlusion
• Carry out prophylactic measures for patients receiving treatment with fixed orthodontic appliances
• Attend interdisciplinary treatment and evaluate stability after orthodontic treatment

General qualifications

The candidate shall be able to

• Clarify growth, eruption and occlusal anomalies, inform about orthodontic treatment needs (or no need)
• Present problems of the malocclusion, the impact of treatment (or no treatment) and inform about the social security benefits associated with orthodontic treatment
• Specify timing and need for referral of patients to orthodontists
• Present the principle for the treatment of various types of malocclusions and the principles of orthodontic treatment with different orthodontic appliances and approaches,
• Inform about adverse effects associated with orthodontic treatment and contribute to the prevention measures for patients undergoing treatment with orthodontic appliances

Teaching takes place during the 7th and 8th semester and each student has one shift a week.

Lessons are held as introductory courses, seminars, lectures (one hour a week) and during clinical practice.
