Teaching semester

Spring

Objectives and Content

The aim of the course is to give a deeper and more quantitative understanding of glacial processes and the interaction between weather/climate and glaciers than in the course GEOV106 Introduction to Quaternary Geology. In the course, the interaction between snow, ice and climate, mass balance modelling, temperature in glaciers, glacier hydrology and glacier dynamics are included. The principles for glacier modelling are presented. The students present selected topics at a seminar.

Learning Outcomes

After completing the course GEOV325 the student should be able to:

- Explain in a quantitative way the interaction between snow, ice and climate

- Explain the principles for mass balance modelling

- Explain the temperature conditions and distribution in glaciers and ice sheets

- Explain how water flows in glaciers (glacier hydrology)

- Explain the principles for glacier movement and glacier dynamics

- Explain the main principles for glacier modelling

- Present selected glaciological topics for fellow students

Required Previous Knowledge

Bachelor's degree in Earth Science, Physical Geography or equivalent, with knowledge of basic principles in quarternary geology

Credit Reduction due to Course Overlap

5 ECTS overlap with GEOL325, 5 ECTS overlap with AG-325 (UNIS)

Forms of Assessment

3-hour written exam.

Due to the measures taken to avoid the spread of SARS-CoV-2, UiB is closed for teaching and assessment. As a consequence, the following changes is made to assessment spring semester 2020:

Examination Support Material

No permitted examination support material.

Grading Scale

The grading scale used is A to F. Grade A is the highest passing grade in the grading scale, grade F is a fail.
