Objectives and content

The bachelor's programme in General Psychology provides general and theoretical knowledge about the basic disciplines of psychology (biological psychology, cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, personality psychology, and social psychology), with the possibility of in-depth studies in selected fields.

The programme also provides knowledge about general research methods in psychology. Psychology is the scientific study of behaviour and cognition among people (and animals). Behaviour is explained in psychology through theories that are based on scientific methods. The programme develops your ability to identify and analyze people in interaction with their surroundings. Reading and participating in lectures and seminars familiarizes you with main trends, major theoretical perspectives, key contributions to research and findings in the field of psychology.

Required Learning Outcomes

A candidate with a bachelor's degree in General Psychology from the Faculty of Psychology , University of Bergen shall:

Knowledge

Have knowledge and understanding of key topics within the field of psychology.
Be able to understand how a psychological phenomenon can be studied and explained in several ways and evaluate different theoretical explanations against each other.
Describe the subject's historical development.
Be able to keep up to date on the field of psychology.

Skills

Be able to evaluate different research methods for the collection and analysis of a data set.
Be able to apply different psychological perspective in the analysis and description of a phenomenon
Be able to conduct a literature search and familiarize themselves with and consider the relevant literature
Demonstrate good written and oral communication skills in line with the psychology discipline.
Conduct a self- limited academic work in line with scientific, methodological and ethical guidelines.

Competences

Show a critical approach to current knowledge and practice in the psychological field
Working independently , organize and plan own work within given deadlines, and in line with ethical requirements and guidelines.
Be able to convey key subject material both orally and in writing to various audiences.
Have knowledge of applicable norms and rules for research ethics.

Admission Requirements

To apply for admission to the bachelor's programme in General Psychology, you must have the Higher Education Entrance Qualification or have met the requirements for prior learning and work experience.

Recommended electives

Elective courses make up the final 60 credits of the degree. In principle they may consist of any type of approved higher education that does not overlap with the compulsory components of the degree. The Faculty of Psychology has accordingly planned a range of recommended courses and combinations that are useful together with the compulsory elements and which may offer further specialization in the options school, health and business. Study period abroad

There are many options if you want to take a semester or two of your education in another country. The University of Bergen has many exchange agreements, both inside and outside Europe. It is a good idea to travel during the elective part of the programme.

Teaching methods

The teaching will be provided in the form of lectures, seminars, Internet-based teaching material, Internet-based groups and discussion forums.

Assessment methods

Emphasis is placed on students receiving experience with different assessment forms like examinations, written work and multiple-choice assignments.

Grading scale

The grading scale A¿F or Pass/Fail is used to assess courses that are part of the programme.

Access to further studies

The study programme provides grounds for admission to the master's programme in Psychology, and may also provide a foundation for admission to other master's programmes at the Faculty of Psychology, and at the University of Bergen's other faculties or at other universities / university colleges.

Employability

Based on the combination of subjects, the programme provides competence for work in the public and private sectors, for example in schools, private enterprises, non-profit organizations, and different parts of the health service, etc. where specialized knowledge of psychology is in demand. Supplementary studies for a master's degree give you qualifications for further research, dissemination and teaching on a higher level.

Evaluation

The bachelor's programme is constantly evaluated by the programme examiner in accordance with UiB's quality assurance guidelines. Each course description in the programme explains how the course is evaluated.

Programme committee

The programme board of the Department of Social Psychology is responsible for the academic content, the structure of the programme, and the quality of the study programme.
