The Norwegian courses do not give credits for applicants with Norwegian as their first Language.

NOR-U1/2 is an intensive course that covers topics from NOR-U1 and NOR-U2 during the course of one semester.

The course has fast progression.

The first part of the course focuses on topics and vocabulary dealing with one´s own person, study, food, clothing, housing, weather, recreational activities and other everyday situations and events.

The latter part of the course focuses on texts relating to daily life and student life. The texts are supplemented with general topics about Norwegian culture and society

Key parts of Norwegian morphology, syntax, and pronunciation will be covered.

Discussion and written assignment's about course topics are central. Students may also make a short presentation on a topic of their own choosing.

The courses can be combined as follows:

1. NOR-U1 (15 Stp) + NOR-U2 (15 Stp) + NOR-U3 (15 Stp) + NOR-U4 (10 Stp)
2. NOR-U1/2 (30 Stp) + NOR-U3 (15 Stp) + NOR-U4 (10 Stp)
3. NOR-U1 (15 Stp) + NOR-U2/3 (30 Stp) + NOR-U4 (10 Stp)

After successfully completing this course, students will have:

Knowledge

• Students will have gained an understanding of normal Norwegian speech and conversations about general topics and topics related to studies and student life.

Skills

• Students will be able to discuss and converse in Norwegian about the same topics, using vocabulary learned during the course and with good pronunciation.
• They will be able to read authentic Norwegian texts at a normal level of difficulty and express themselves in writing about topics covered by the course.
• Students will learn the key parts of Norwegian morphology and syntax.

General competence

• Students will acquire an active vocabulary of ca. 2000 words and an even greater passive vocabulary.
• They will be able to recognize words and phrases that they have seen or heard before, and partly understand the meaning of a word from their knowledge of Norwegian morphology.

There is overlap between NOR-U1/2 and topics covered in NOR-INTRO and NOR-U1.

NOR-U1/2 combined with NOR-INTRO will give a credit reduction of 7,5 credits.

NOR-U1/2 combined with NOR-U1 will give a credit reduction of 15 credits.

The course runs over approximately 100 hours of instruction.

It is expected that students are prepared and participate actively in lessons.

Attendance is mandatory. Participants who are absent more than 25% of the time will not be permitted to take the exam.

Students will submit at least five written assignments during the course.

The compulsory requirements are valid for three semesters. This includes the semester when the lectures are given and the following two semesters.

The course concludes with an examination that includes an oral and a written part in Norwegian bokmål.

In the spring semester 2020, the form of assessment has been changed from written school exam and oral exam to written take home exam and oral online exam. This has been done as a measure to prevent transmission of the corona virus. An overall grade will be given and both the written and the oral part of the examination must be passed in order to pass the course.

The oral part of the exam lasts about 20 -25 minutes (in addition to any preparation time) and consists of a conversation between examiner and one or two students.

The written part of the exam lasts 4 hours and covers listening tests, reading and writing skills.

Both the written and the oral part of the examination must be passed, in order to pass the course and an overall grade will be given

Students who have been registered in NOR-U1/2 three times, cannot register for courses and examinations in NOR-U01, NOR-U1 or NOR-U2 due to the overlap.

The reading list is announced at the start of the semester. A primer in Norwegian or a compendium of texts at the beginners and intermediate level will be used. Students will also need a dictionary.

The course will be evaluated in line with the Department's policies and UiB's quality assurance system.

The evaluation may be conducted in writing or as discussion with the responsible instructor.
