Learning outcomes 9th Semester Medisin University of Bergen

On completion of 9th Semester the student should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

• The student can explain the process of normal delivery
• The student can diagnose (by combining symptoms and findings) the most important obstetric complications during pregnancy and labour
• The student can suggest which women/which problems in pregnancy that should be referred to specialist or to the obstetric ward
• The student can (by combining symptoms and findings) diagnose and explain the treatment of the most common acute gynecological conditions: infections, adnexal torsion/ruptured cyst, extra-uterine pregnancy, spontaneous abortion, acute vaginal bleeding
• The student can (by combining symptoms and findings) diagnose and explain the treatment of the most common non-acute gynecological conditions and be able to identify conditions that need to be referred to specialist care
• The student can explain indications for the main surgical procedures in gynecology (hysterectomy, genital prolapse surgery, urinary incontinence surgery)
• The student can explain the principles for prevention, identification of symptoms, diagnostics and treatment of gynecological cancer
• The student can explain the principles for initial imaging in main gynecologic diagnoses ¿ in general practice and what to refer for advanced imaging
• The student can explain the pharmacology of femalereproduction, including drug properties, indications for use, adverse effects and potential interactions
• The student can explain normal growth and development in children and adolescents (including knowledge from the 6th semester). The student should know the most important milestones for gross and fine motor-, language-, cognitive- and social- development
• The student can explain age dependent differences in the presentation of signs and symptoms in disease, and of age related disorders (including psychosomatic disorders)
• The student can (by combining symptoms and findings) recognize and diagnose acute/ severe diseases in children, and know how to institute treatment and how to act in acute situations
• The student can acknowledge signs of child abuse
• The students can explain the principles for follow-up of children with the major chronic diseases
• The students can explain the principles of nutrition, including breast feeding, in infants, children and adolescents. The students should be able to calculate basal nutritional needs of children and calculate fluid replacement in cases of dehydration.
• The student can explain principles for drug toxicity during pregnancy
• The student can explain principles for toxicity assessment of drugs in lactation and knows which medications that affect lactation
• The student knows with the most common inherited human disorders and syndromes
• The student understands the principles, use and cost-benefit aspects of laboratory diagnostics in medical genetics
• The student is familiar with legislation and ethical aspects in medical genetics, including prenatal diagnostics
• The student is familiar with general principles for pediatric imaging, eg. radiation doses (ALARA principle; as low as reasonable achievable), preparation, need for anesthesia etc.
• The student knows established imaging algorithms for the most common infections such as pneumonia and urinary tract infection
• The student knows the most common child specific fractures, including non-accidental injuries- and the established imaging protocols for these
• The student knows established imaging algorithms for acute abdomen in newborns and young children, increasing head circumference, developmental delay and epilepsy
• The student can give an account of the most common clinical conditions in child and adolescent psychiatry
• The student can give an account of the most common working methods in child and adolescent psychiatry
• The student can give an account of the authorities and services most commonly involved in the management of youths with mental health problems
• The student can give an account of the cooperation between different professionals and services, respectively, in the management of youths with mental health problems
• The student can give an account of the relevant articles in the Act of mental health services for children below the age of 18

Skills

• The student can perform Symphysis Fundus -measurement in second and third trimester of pregnancy
• The student can perform Leopold¿s maneuvers to decide presentation of the fetus in second and third trimester of pregnancy
• The student can perform an outpatient examination in pregnancy in general practice
• The student can perform an outpatient Gynecologic examination in general practice including PAP-smear, IUD insertion and microbiological testing
• The student can perform a proper gynecologic medical record including menstrual, obstetric, gynecologic and sexual history and symptoms
• Drug use in pregnancy: the student can perform risk assessment based on principal considerations and knows the contraindicated drugs
• Drug use in lactation: the student can perform risk assessment based on principal considerations
• The student is able to communicate with children at different ages and developmental stages and with their parents/caretakers/relatives, including communication about severe or lethal diseases in children
• The student is able to perform clinical examination of children at different ages and developmental stages, including neonates.
• The student is able to perform AHLR in children
• The students is able to measure height, weight, blood pressure, head circumference, oxygen saturation
• The student is able to use pediatric growth charts
• The student is able to evaluate state of puberty according to Tanner
• The student is able to evaluate developmental stage versus chronological age
• The student is able to instruct children and their parents in the use of inhaled drugs.
• The student is able to interpret basic lung function findings in children and adolescents
• The student is capable of drawing and interpreting pedigrees in medical genetics
• The student is capable of identifying suspected inherited disorders within a family, and calculating empirical risks
• The student is capable of producing a report for the referral of patients or families to diagnostic service and counselling in medical genetics in Norway
• The student can read a chest radiograph and abdominal plain films to diagnose pneumonia and obstruction of the gastrointestinal tract
• The student can take a child and adolescent psychiatric anamnesis including risk factors during pregnancy and delivery, development (motor functions, language, eating habits, social functioning, attention, impulsivity, learning of skills), somatic issues, family and social items, development of present challenges, present symptoms and level of functioning
• The student can make a total picture of a child and adolescent psychiatry case including a clinical formulation (what the emotional or behavioral symptoms of the child represent) and present and discuss it with peer students
• The student can judge whether a child or adolescent with behavioral or emotional problems will need help in the health care services, and if so, what kind of help
• The student can make a referral to the child and adolescent mental health care service

General competence

• The student is able to reflect on their own practice as physician: where the limits of their professional competence goes and seek advice from colleague when necessary, especially with regard to pediatric, gynecological and obstetric problems
• The student can interact with other health professions
• The student can recognize and reflect on the ethical and legal challenges in women and child care
• The student can reflect on common ethical issues related to women and child care
• The student acknowledges the differences between adult- and pediatric imaging, eg. choice of modality, protocol as well as the differences in findings
• The student can give an account of the legislation relevant for the rights and the autonomy of children below the age of 18

The student can give an account of the role of the child welfare authorities when there is a worry for the care of a child

Compulsory assignements during the semester must be approved in order to take the semester exam.

Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 (corona virus) the spring semester of 2020 the written exam will be an home-exam.
