KIN104 builds on KIN103 and provides further beginner¿s level instruction in and about the Chinese language, with emphasis on language structure, written language and normally polite speech. This is an offer for students who wish to learn modern mandarin over the basic level.
Students will acquire practical skills in modern Mandarin, both written and oral. They are to learn a vocabulary of 300 words related to everyday life and society, as well as 160 signs. They must also learn to express their own point of view on different topics. Proper pronunciation will be emphasized.
Upon completing the course, the student is expected to:
- have acquired a basic vocabulary and grasped the basic grammar
- have acquired a 300-word vocabulary related to everyday life and society and 150 signs.
- be able to write a series of the most useful Chinese signs without consulting a glossary or dictionary
- be able to express his/her own point of view on different topics
This course includes 6 mandatory take-home assignments. Additionally, the student must in the course of the semester give at least one oral presentation. The student must attain approval on at least 4 out of 6 take-home assignments, as well as on the presentation, in order to be eligible to take the exam.
Students must attend at least 75 % of the teaching sessions. Mandatory assignments are valid for one additional semester following the semester of instruction.
The assessment in the course is a four-hour written exam in reading fluency, grammar and writing ability.
The exam may be conducted digitally.
Textbook for beginners, which comes with its own workbook, and multimedia tools. Dictionaries and a separate grammar book.
The reading list will be ready by 1 Jun for the fall semester, and 1 Dec for the spring semester.
