Objectives and Content

This course offers preliminary introduction to Chinese culture, history, society and Chinese language. The course consists of two parts. The major part is basic knowledge of Chinese civilization history, with particular emphasis on culture and history. There will also be introductory lectures on Chinese language (Chinese pinyin and Chinese characters).

Learning Outcomes

After completing the course:

Knowledge

- to have a general picture of Chinese civilization development through milestone events happened throughout dynastic history.

- to have a multidimensional understanding about Chinese society through modern history, geography, education development, religion, people (ethnic groups) and politics (parties, governance and administration structure).

Language Skills

- to have basic knowledge of Chinese character and character creation and Romanization, and to obtain practical skills of Pinyin spelling and Chinese character reading.

General Competence

- to provide an insight for the learners to understand modern China and Chinese people from the perspectives of history and traditional culture.

Credit Reduction due to Course Overlap

There will be a 10 point reduce in credits if KIN100 is combined with ASIA100.

Access to the Course

The course is open to all with admission to the University of Bergen

Teaching and learning methods

The instruction will be given in the form of lectures, 2 hours per week for 12 weeks.

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance

This course has one final written exam. In order to be eligible to take the exam, the student will have to pass a Chinese language qualifying test, including practical skills in pinyin and character reading. Students must attend at least 75 % of the classes.

A three hour written exam

Grading Scale

The grading scale A-F is used, where F is a failing grade.

Assessment Semester

The exam is offered in both semesters for those who have passed the language qualifying test.

Reading List

For both subject knowledge and language parts, except lecture notes in form of PPT slides, a compendium of 500 pages will be provided for student¿s reference. The reading list will be ready within 01.06 for the autumn semester and 01.12 for the spring semester.

Course Evaluation

The teaching will be evaluated according to the quality assurance system of the University of Bergen.

The Programme Board is responsible for the academic content and structure of the study programme, and for the quality of all the subjects therein.
