Core facility for flow cytometry, Department of Clinical Science, Laboratory building 5th floor
Aim: Basic introduction to flow cytometry. The practical part of the course should enable the students to understand applications for flow cytometry. In addition, the applications used during the practical part of the course will be introduced in seminars by the course leaders.
Content:
Theoretical part:
-The course leaders will give a theoretical introduction to flow cytometry and some of the most common applications.
Practical part: Hands-on training at one of the local flow cytometers (BD AccuriC6)
- Quantification of apoptotic cells
- Cell cycle analyses
- Simple staining of cells with surface markers
- Analysis of transfected cells
On completion of the course HUIMM307 the student is able to/has:
Knowledge
- understanding for basic applications for flow cytometry
- knowledge on which and how many different fluorochromes one can use on a given flow cytometer
- evaluate the quality of flow cytometry data
Skills
- plan and perform basic experiments using flow cytometry
- quality control generated flow cytometry data
- present flow cytometry data in a scientific way
Competence
- understanding of basic flow cytometry
- understanding as to why to use flow cytometry in a certain research question
- interpret basic flow cytometry data
Basic knowledge on apoptosis and cell cycle.
Experience with basic laboratory techniques such as pipetting and centrifugation.
The course will only be given if at least 4 students are registered for the course, and is limited to 10 students.
Course-coordinator decides who can participate.
