Objectives and Content
This course prepares students for writing a master's thesis in English Literature and Culture by introducing students to the basics of research methods within literary studies. This includes finding and evaluating source material, best practices for argumentative and critical writing, research and writing ethics, incorporating theory and methodologies, developing a thesis topic and argument, and writing a final thesis proposal.

Access to the Course
The course is open to students in the master's programme in English and the master¿s programme in Foreign Language Teacher Education at the University of Bergen.
Teaching and learning methods
Seminars: up to 16 hours in total.
In the case that fewer than five students register for a course, the organized teaching may be adapted to fit the number of students. If this occurs, students will be informed at the start of the semester, and before the registration deadline 1. February/1. September.
Compulsory Assignments and Attendance
Attendance is obligatory for at least 6 seminars, including obligatory attendance at the final proposal presentation workshop (the last seminar). Students enrolled in the Master's Programme in English who wish to submit a thesis in English literature and culture must take this course. This course is not obligatory for students enrolled in the Master's Programme in Foreign Language Teacher Education.
Compulsory assignments are valid for one semester following the semester of instruction.
Forms of Assessment
Course assessment consists of a portfolio of work. The portforlio must contain final versions of four assignments, one of which is the final thesis proposal.

Grading Scale
Grades are awarded on a pass/fail scale. All of the four portfolio assignments have to be approved in order to pass the exam.
Assessment Semester
Course assessment in ENG340 is offered in the Spring and Autumn semesters.
Reading List
The reading list comprises secondary material on literary theory, methods, and research skills necessary for completing a master's level project. In addition to the works on the reading list, the student must identify and consult the primary and secondary literature pertaining to their development of a master's thesis topic.
The reading list will be available by 1 December for the Spring semester.
Course Evaluation
The course will be evaluated in accordance with the quality assurance system of the University of Bergen.
