Objectives and Content

On completion of the course the student should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

The student should:

- have basic insight into the structures of the English language, and on central analytic terms in syntax and morphology.

Skills

The student should:

- be able to use this knowledge to analyze linguistic material

- also have a certain understanding and command of a precise linguistic vocabulary

General competence

The student:

- has enough competence to expand his or her knowledge, for example through further studies in English linguistics

- can express himself or herself in correct academic English

- is in command of the relevant linguistics concepts and vocabulary

- have sufficient competence to be able to expand their knowledge, for example through further studies in English linguistics

- can express themselves in correct academic English

Recommended Previous Knowledge

It is strongly advised that students, in addition to fulfilling the general admission requirements, also have good grades in specialized English courses from Upper Secondary School.

For students with a background other than the Norwegian school system, a level of competence in English corresponding to C1 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages is recommended.

The teaching demands knowledge equivalent to EXFAC00SK Basic Linguistics and ENG100. It is strongly recommended to have completed these courses before continuing to study English.

Credit Reduction due to Course Overlap

Due to course overlap, a student cannot receive credits for ENG114 in combination with ENG101 (10 ECTS) and ENG111 (10 ECTS). The number of attempts on the exam is three, this includes attempts in ENG101.

Access to the Course

The course is open to all students admitted to the University of Bergen.

For exchange students:
Applicants have to document English language proficiency to access the course. Student should hold a level of C1 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Language (CEFR). For valid tests, please see uib.no/exchange.

Teaching and learning methods

Lectures and groups: up to 36 hours.

Students are expected to be actively present in class. This expectation is also the basis for the preparation towards the exam.

In the case that fewer than five students register for a course, the organized teaching may be adapted to fit the number of students. If this occurs, students will be informed at the start of the semester, and before the registration deadline 1. February/1. September.

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance

There are no compulsory assignments, but students may write practice exams. It is highly recommended that students do so.

Forms of Assessment

The exam is a four-hour school exam.

The exam may be digital.

Examination Support Material

No aids are allowed during the exam.

Grading Scale

The grading scale A-F is used, where F is a fail.

Assessment Semester

An exam in ENG114 is offered each semester - the regular exam at the end of the spring semester, and the re-take exam in the middle of the fall semester.

Reading List

The curriculum is comprised of general topics in English grammar. The reading list will be available by 1 December for the Spring Semester.

Course Evaluation

The teaching is evaluated in accordance with the quality control system of the University of Bergen.
