Knowledge
Students will be able to
- use general dental knowledge at a level that at all times reflects the information that has been taught in the specialized disciplines of dentistry
- apply theories and knowledge from the psychology and pedagogy course that can be transferred to the individual patient
- possess an understanding of diseases in a social, psychological and educational context
- apply knowledge of how change in behaviour is often necessary to ensure that the patient learns to take care of their own oral health
- introduce educational initiatives to increase the interest in preventative dental work in special population groups (nurses, nursing assistants, preschool teachers, school students etc.)
- awareness of possible patient reimbursement opportunities from HELFO
Skills
The student will be able to
- identify diseases of the oral cavity and bite- function deviations
- have acquired manual skills through practical training in dental hygienist treatment
- able to complete an academic discussion in connection with the "delivery" of fully treated patients
- initiate a debate on current literature through a PowerPoint presentation
- give a talk about preventative dental work to a large group of people
- present a patient case for their fellow students
General competence
The student will be able to
- recognize that an important objective in individualized preventative dental healthcare is to enable people to maintain and improve their own dental health, by facilitating opportunities to perform actions that promote and affect good dental health.
- communicate with and carry out individual-oriented prevention measures, motivate and instruct people in different age groups and stages of development in disease prevention
- recognize that efforts to improve public health is of common interest to all parties in the health service. Hygienists will be able to inform and refer patients to appropriate health institutions where necessary.
- recognize that not all sources of "literature" are equally credible.
