Objectives and Content

The course gives an introduction to selected statistical methods used in biology and medicine. Topics covered are statistical genetics, population genetics, mark-recapture methods, line transect methods for abundance estimation, population dynamics and pharmakokinetics. The methods covered are being used extensively in medicine and management of wildlife resources (for instance in fisheries). The obligatory exercises will be solved in the software package R.

Learning Outcomes

After completed course, the students are expected to be able to:

¿ Understand statistical methods used in biology

¿ Have a basic understanding of modern population genetics

¿ Understand how unknown parameters (such as population size) are estimated

¿ Have knowledge about the software package R

Recommended Previous Knowledge

STAT111 Statistical Methods or STAT200 Applied Statistics and MAT101 Elementary Calculus I or MAT111 Calculus I.

Forms of Assessment

Written examination: 5 hours. Can be changed to oral examination if less than 20 students are registered for the course.

Examination support materials: Non- programmable calculator, according to model listed in faculty regulations

Grading Scale

The grading scale used is A to F. Grade A is the highest passing grade in the grading scale, grade F is a fail.
