The course aims to give the students a general introduction to instrumentation and measurement systems, including characterization of these. Different sensor principles are presented with emphasis on signal conditioning, signal processing and transmission of measurement signals.

 By completing the course the students should be able to:

• describe the individual elements of the general measurement system.
• elaborate on the static characteristics of measurement system elements, including steady state measurement system accuracy.
• explain and identify dynamic characteristics of measurement systems, including the step response and the frequency response of 1. and 2. order systems.
• elaborate on techniques for compensation of dynamic errors in measurement systems.
• demonstrate knowledge of signals and noise in measurement systems, including methods to reduce the effect of noise and interference in measurement systems.
• elaborate on functionality and typical characteristics of resistive, capacitive inductive, electromagnetic, thermoelectric and piezoelectric sensing elements.
• explain signal conditioning using the Wheatstone measurement bridge.
• elaborate on fundamental principles in fluid mechanics.
• explain functionality and typical characteristics for different flowmeters, including the differential pressure flowmeter, the turbine meter, the vortex flowmeter, the electromagnetic flowmeter, the ultrasound transit-time flowmeter and the Coriolis flowmeter.
• elaborate on the fundamental principles of control systems theory, including mathematical modeling of dynamic systems, state space analysis, mono and multivariable systems, feedback systems, graphical representation of the frequency response, PID controller, controllability and observability.
