The course deals with classical mechanics and basic thermodynamics: oscillations, mechanical waves, gravitation, basic celestial mechanics, the special theory of relativity, thermodynamical processes and variables, the laws of thermodynamics, and heat transfer mechanisms. The course forms the basis for continued studies in e.g. physics, geophysics, and industrial processes.

To After having completed PHYS113 the students shall be able to

• use the laws of classical mechanics for solving physical problems,
• demonstrate an understanding of Newton's law of gravitation and planetary motion,
• explain the principles behind the special theory of relativity and solve simple problems based on it,
• understand the basic thermodynamical concepts temperature, heat, internal energy and entropy,
• explain the laws of thermodynamics,
• use the first and second law of thermodynamics to calculate the theoretical efficiency of heat engines.
