Courses: KJEM210 Chemical Thermodynamics - Autumn 2017

Credits

10.0

Language of Instruction

Norwegian

Teaching semester

Autumn. Limited capacity.

Objectives and Content

The subject gives a thorough description of the laws of thermodynamics together with selected topics in reaction kinetics. As kinetics gives a mathematical description of how quickly chemical reactions occur, thermodynamics explains the kind of reacions that take place.

Kjem 210 builds on the thermodynamic and kinetic principles introduced in KJEM 110.

The subject includes chemical equilibrium, phase equilibria, phase diagrams (transitions between gaseous, liquid and solid states of matter), the properties of liquid mixtures and the properties of liquid solutions.

Important principles and phenomena will be investigated in the laboratory course.

Learning Outcomes

After completing the course KJEM210 the student will be able to:

- energy/work/heat relations

- phase equilibria and phase changes

- liquid mixtures and colligative properties

- chemical equilibria

use principles of reaction kinetics to determine reaction velocity

Required Previous Knowledge

KJEM110 or equivalent (basic principles of general chemistry)

Recommended Previous Knowledge

MAT101(basic principles of gneral chemistry and mathematics)

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance

Laboratory course w/reports and laboratory preparation. Compulsory work are valid for ten following semesteres.
The student must participate and pass a course on Health, Environment and Safety.

Forms of Assessment

Written exam (4h). Compulsory work are valid for ten following semesteres.
Examination support materials: Non- programmable calculator, according to model listed in faculty regulations

Compulsory work must be submitted within the given deadlines for the course. Approval of the compulsory work is necessary to get admittance to the written exam.

Grading Scale
