Objectives and Content

This course covers the chemical elements and their properties with respect to position in the Periodic Table. Particular attention is paid to periodic trends and relationships among the elements and their respective compounds. The course furthermore covers bonding theory and the structure of molecules, metals, salts and minerals. Finally, the course also describes the environmental, biological and industrial role of inorganic compounds, in particular the important role of metal ions in biological systems.

Learning Outcomes

After completing the course KJEM120 the student will be able to:

 

Required Previous Knowledge

KJEM110 or equivalent.

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance

Participation in minimum 8 colloquium. Mandatory written exercises upon selected colloquium themes will be given evaluation (passed/not passed). Mandatory colloquium and passed written exercises are valid for six following semesters.

Forms of Assessment

Written exam (4h).
Written exercises (compulsory work) are valid for six following semesteres.
Examination supporting materials during the written exam: Non-programmable calculator, according to permitted model listed in Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences regulations.
Compulsory work must be submitted within the given deadlines for the course. Approval of the compulsory work is necessary to get admittance to the written exam.


 

Grading Scale

The grading scale used is A to F. Grade A is the highest passing grade in the grading scale, grade F is a fail.
