Teaching semester
Autumn
Objectives and Content
The course gives an introduction to different types of geohazards, their potential consequences and how disasters can be prevented. Main focus will be on Norwegian geohazards, but extreme events from other parts of the world will be discussed. Main focus will be on landslides, floods, tsunamis and earthquakes, for which the geological and physical process will be discussed in addition to potential consequences and methods for quantifying hazard. In addition, we will discuss potential interlinkages between different types of geohazards, disaster prevention and management and quantification and communication of uncertainties. An important part of the course will be a series of practical exercises allowing the student to work with different aspects of the syllabus. One exercise will be a field exercise focused on landslide mapping.
Learning Outcomes
After completing the course GEOV217 the students should be able to:- explain the physical and geological processes causing geohazards such as landslides, floods, tsunamis and earthquakes
- describe methods for quantifying hazard for the individual geohazards and factors controlling their uncertainty.
- explain possible consequences of geohazards as well as risk and disaster management.
- complete a basic hazard assessment for selected geohazards.
- identify and categorize slide deposits in the field.
- discuss possible interactions between geohazards and their consequences.
Required Previous Knowledge
Principles of geology and physics of the earth.
Forms of Assessment
Written, 4 hours
Grading Scale
The grading scale used is A to F. Grade A is the highest passing grade in the grading scale, grade F is a fail.
