Objectives and Content

The course focuses on diverse themes in meteorology. Students will be introduced to central research questions through current research papers, as well as overview or review papers and ground-breaking research articles. Students will discuss chosen articles in the research field, and will write summary reports as well as a white paper on a chosen theme. The theme will change from semester to semester.

Learning Outcomes

By the completion of the course, the student should be able to:

- report the main ideas, theories, methods and results of a selected theme or research topic in meteorology

- recover, evaluate, and critically discuss relevant literature

- present the essence and current discourse of the selected meteorological topic in written and oral form

- write in accordance with scientific writing principles and research ethics

Required Previous Knowledge

Bachelor in meteorology and oceanography or equivalent programs.

Teaching Methods and Extent of Organized Teaching

2 lectures á 2 hours in the first week to introduce the topic. Weekly article discussions á 2 hours including student presentations. 2 lectures á 2 hours in the middle of the semester on scientific writing.

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance

Attendance of all lectures and participation in the discussions is compulsory. Written summary report, white paper assignment, participation in the peer review exercise and student presentations are required. All parts must be passed.

Forms of Assessment

Student presentations that counts 40 percent, summary paper that counts 20 percent and written assignment that counts 40 percent of the final grade.

Grading Scale

The grading scale used is A to F. Grade A is the highest passing grade in the grading scale, grade F is a fail.
