By the end of the course, students will have acquired knowledge about the pronunciation features pertaining to some varieties of English and will be able to distinguish between these varieties.
The course will provide students with a vocabulary for linguistic description and analysis.
General competence:
Students will have acquired the skills necessary to expand their knowledge through further studies of linguistics at 200-level.
It is strongly advised that students, in addition to fulfilling the general admission requirements, also have good grades in specialized English courses from Upper Secondary School.
For students with a background other than the Norwegian school system, a level of competence in English corresponding to B2 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages is recommended.
It is also recommended that students have completed EXFAC00SK (Language and Communication), ENG100 (Introduction to English studies), ENG114 and ENG115 or corresponding courses.
For exchange students:
Qualified applicants have to pass a diagnostic test when arriving in Bergen (more information about the test will be sent to applicants by email).
Lectures: total 24 hours
Students are expected to take part in and actively contribute to teaching. This expectation is also the basis for the preparation towards the exam.
An exam in ENG109 is offered each semester - at the end of the fall semester and in the middle of the spring semester. The exam is a three hour school exam. No aids are allowed during the exam.
The exam may be digital.
