Objectives and Content

ENG109 builds on ENG114 and ENG115. The course will give students insight into and knowledge of the pronunciation features in a number of varieties of English. The course will also provide students with a vocabulary for linguistic description and analysis.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will have acquired knowledge about the pronunciation features pertaining to some varieties of English and will be able to distinguish between these varieties.

General competence:

Students will have acquired the skills necessary to expand their knowledge through further studies of linguistics at 200-level.

Recommended Previous Knowledge

It is strongly advised that students, in addition to fulfilling the general admission requirements, also have good grades in specialized English courses from Upper Secondary School.

For students with a background other than the Norwegian school system, a level of competence in English corresponding to C1 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages is recommended.

It is also recommended that students have completed EXFAC00SK (Language and Communication), ENG100 (Introduction to English studies), ENG114 and ENG115 or corresponding courses.

Credit Reduction due to Course Overlap

Credits cannot be awarded for both ENG109 and ENG105 (10 credits), ENG106 (5 credits), ENG111 (5 credits) or ENG112 (credits). The number of attempts on the exam is three, this includes attempts in ENG106.

Access to the Course

The course is open to all with admission to the University of Bergen.

For exchange students:
Applicants have to document English language proficiency to access the course. Student should hold a level of C1 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Language (CEFR). For valid tests, please see uib.no/exchange.

Teaching Methods and Extent of Organized Teaching

Lectures: total 24 hours

Students are expected to take part in and actively contribute to teaching. This expectation is also the basis for the preparation towards the exam.

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance

There are no compulsory assignments, but practice exams will be offered and it is highly recommended that students hand these in.

Forms of Assessment

The exam is a three hour school exam.

The exam may be digital.

Examination Support Material

No aids are allowed during the exam.

Grading Scale

The grading scale A-F is used, where F is a fail.

Assessment Semester

An exam in ENG109 is offered each semester - at the end of the fall semester and in the middle of the spring semester.

Reading List

The material covers an introduction to different international varieties of English. The reading list will be available by 1 June for the Autumn semester.

Course Evaluation

The teaching is evaluated according to the quality assurance system of the University of Bergen.
