Objectives and Content

ENG108 offers insight into various social and political aspects of the English language, as well as linguistic descriptions of some global varieties of English. The course will provide students with a vocabulary for linguistic description and analysis.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will have acquired knowledge about some social, political and ideological aspects of the English language. They will also be able to discuss the development of English as a global language. The course will provide students with a vocabulary for linguistic description and analysis.

General competence:

Students will have acquired the skills necessary to expand their knowledge through further studies of linguistics at 200-level.

Recommended Previous Knowledge

It is strongly advised that students, in addition to fulfilling the general admission requirements, also have good grades in specialized English courses from Upper Secondary School.

For students with a background other than the Norwegian school system, a level of competence in English corresponding to B2 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages is recommended.

It is also recommended that students have completed EXFAC00SK (Language and Communication), ENG100 (Introduction to English studies), ENG114 and ENG115 or corresponding courses.

Credit Reduction due to Course Overlap

Credits cannot be awarded for both ENG108 and ENG104 (5 credits), ENG106 (5 credits), ENG106L (5 credits), ENG111 (5 credits) or ENG112 (5 credits).

Access to the Course

For exchange students:

Qualified applicants have to pass a diagnostic test when arriving in Bergen (more information about the test will be sent to applicants by email).

Teaching Methods and Extent of Organized Teaching

Lectures: total 24 hours.

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance

In order to be allowed to take the exam, students must submit and get approved one written assignment. The assignment will concern topics covered by the course and must be submitted by the deadline.

Forms of Assessment

An exam in ENG108 is offered each semester - at the end of the fall semester and in the middle of the spring semester. The exam is a three hour school exam. No aids are allowed during the exam.

The exam may be digital.

The grading scale A-F is used, where F is a fail.
