Aim:
The course gives the students an introduction to and overview over various energy resources, and their applications. The course shall convey understanding of how various energy resources contribute to the energy supply nationally and globally and how the energy is used.
Content:
Important renewable energy resources such as solar energy, wind energy, hydropower, tidal and wave energy, bioenergy and geothermal energy are to be discussed. Further, nuclear power and fossil energy resources together with CO2 capture and storage will be discussed. The various energy resources will be discussed in a sustainability and economic perspective. The concept of life cycle analysis will be introduced. The course will give an overview over national and global energy production and consumption as well as projections forward in time.
On completion of the course the student should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:
Knowledge
The student:
-can explain the various energy resources and their relative importance in the global energy supply
- can explain how energy is applied and the corresponding requirements to the energy supply
Skills
The student:
-can make simple estimates on available energy from various resources
-can do estimates on cost of energy
General competence
The student:
- can discuss basic challenges related to the global energy consumption
Approved mandatory project assignments.
Valid for four semesters: The semester the compulsory assignments were approved and the three following semesters.
Mandatory project assignments will count 20% of the final grade and must be approved.
Written exam 4 hours will count 80% of final grade and must be passed. In case of less than 10 students, oral exam may be applied. Oral exam will then count 80% of the final grade and must passed.
The course will be evaluated by the students in accordance with the quality assurance system at UiB and the department.
Normally, referents groups will be used each year.
