Objectives and Content

The dental radiology course is based on knowledge about radiation physics, chemistry, anatomy and pathology, and it includes radiographic examination of the oral cavity as part of the overall examination of the patient.

Learning Outcomes

KnowledgeThe student will be able to explain

X-ray physics background
Radiographic material: film, phosphor plates, sensors
Radiographic clinical examination technique
Image analysis
Radiobiology and radiation protection

SkillsStudents will be able to perform

Production of technically good radiographs through training of intraoral recording technique
Scanning of the image plates for digital radiographs
Inducing X-rays on film
Choose optimal viewing conditions
Describe the intra-oral radiographs
Recognize normal anatomic structures, caries, marginal and apical periodontitis, marginal bone loss connected to implants and image defects
Work according to radiation hygiene regulations

General competenceStudents will be able to

Evaluate when x-rays are needed
Protect patients and operators from all unnecessary radiation

Teaching Methods and Extent of Organized Teaching

The course consists of 15 systematic lectures and 39 hours of seminars, demonstrations and clinical training with x-ray photography and image analysis.The seminar series includes a test of knowledge and interpretation of radiographs.

Forms of Assessment

4 hour written exam.
