• Behavioural aspects of pediatric dentistry
• Disturbances concerning tooth development and tooth eruption
• Cariology (caries, tooth decay)
• Erosion and tooth wear
• Gingivitis (inflammation of gingiva) and periodontitis (gingival inflammation with progressive loss of alveolar bone around the teeth), Traumatic Dental Injuries (trauma to teeth and their supporting tissue)
• Dental care for disabled and sick children

SkillsStudents will be able to

• make contact and communicate with children and parents, and show interest and willingness to cope with various situations
• implement adequate diagnosis of the group's common diseases, develop, implement and evaluate an individualized treatment plan within the competence area of the dental hygienist and keep accurate records
• detect deviations from the norm and see when referral to a dentist or other organizations is needed (also show vigilance in relation to neglect / child abuse)
• conduct dental health promotion and be updated on the fluoride topic
• deal with various forms of children¿s behavioural management problems in respect to dental treatment, and conduct systematic therapy, promoting them to cope with the treatment situation. Additionally, to know the principles for treatment under sedation and general anaesthesia
• explain the occurrence of dental erosion, dental caries, ordinary dental developmental disorders as well as the etiology, appearance and kind of development of these diseases common , among children and adolescents
• account for acute treatment of Traumatic Dental Injuries
• be familiar with the characteristics of dental care for children with rare medical conditions

General competenceThe candidate shall show

• professional attitudes concerning exercise of the profession of Dental Hygiene among children and adolescents. By this we mean respect for the individual patient as a growing and developing individual, and that the candidate recognizes that patients have different needs and suppositions.
• open and constructive dialogue with the patient and the patient's guardians
• that the candidate recognizes the need for their own continuous updating and quality assurance of knowledge and skills
• demonstrate an understanding for social aspects of paediatric dentistry (e.g. today's multicultural society)
• interdisciplinary collaboration with other health professionals who work with children and adolescents
