• the structure, composition and properties of relevant groups of biomaterials; permanent and temporary dental restoration materials for direct and indirect techniques
• procedures that could affect the materials in the oral cavity
• materials used for preventing dental disease and other dental injuries
• regulatory / legislative matters that affect the selection and use of biomaterials
• potential biological and clinical effects

SkillsStudents will be able to

• make a critical evaluation of dental materials based on knowledge of the properties and information from manufacturers as well as from independent sources of information
• consider relevant materials and take adequate account of present biomaterials for the treatment of patients
• assess any abnormal reactions to materials
• handle relevant dental biomaterials in an adequate manner

General competenceThe student should

• communicate with the public on issues related to dental materials
• understand that dental materials are subjected to rapid changes and therefore a continuous updating of knowledge and skills, as well as methods, is necessary in order to achieve the required competence
