Spring. The course runs only if enough students enrol

The course aims to give the students practical experience in PC based data acquisition, analysis and control using standard measurement instruments and process instrumentation. Process analysis, discrete process control and development of process control algorithms are emphasized in the course.

By completing the course the students should be able to:

• program data acquisition and control sequences using the LabVIEW software development tool, including data acquisition of instruments using standard interface protocols, and data acquisition using standard multi-function data acquisition devices.
• publish acquired experimental data using standard communication platforms.
• perform experiments on electrical circuits to determine their frequency and step response.
• elaborate on the overall instrumentation functionality of the two-phase flow rig of the course, including the functionality and limitations of each flowmeter mounted in the flow rig.
• program a user friendly data acquisition interface for the flow rig, and characterize the properties of selected instruments and valves in the flow rig.
• explain the functionality of a pulse width modulated DC motor, determine the physical model of the motor and characterize it experimentally.
• control the speed of a pulse width modulated DC motor using a PID controller.
• elaborate on the functionality of a control system consisting of two combined water tanks, and determine the dynamic model of the control system.
• elaborate on linearization of non-linear processes.
• design a control system for a multi variable dynamic system, including decoupling of coupled processes.
• develop a PID controller using the LabVIEW software development tool based on Euler¿s backward method for derivative approximation.
• conclude the results from the laboratory exercises into a written report.
