The course gives an introduction to modern measurement techniques and data acquisition, use of different measuring instruments, treatment and assessment of experimental data. The laboratory exercises demonstrate measurements of quantities of relevance to physics. Some of the exercises are of relevance for environmental physics.

At the completion of PHYS114, the student shall be able to:

• Use standard laboratory instruments (like multimeter, counters and oscilloscope) in different measurement setups.
• Use and program a PC-controlled data acquisition system to carry out simple measurements.
• Assess the data and the derived physical quantities by the use of formulas for uncertainties and error propagation.
• Present the topics and results in a comprehensive laboratory journal.
