Objectives and Content

Aim:

Knowledge in general practice, competence, attitude and practice competence

 

Contents:

General practice is the study of how to take care of diseases and illnesses in primary health care. From a medical perspective the general practitioner provides the whole picture, where personal and continuous health care for the individual and his/her family is based on a biological, psychological and social understanding. The course includes clinical diagnostics, treatment, continuous observation and prevention of disease treated in general practice and conditions that demand cooperation between different parts of the health care system. Other important disciplines are clinical communication, consultation techniques and the doctor-patient-relationship as a tool. The social characters of the general practice and the general practitioner`s exceptional insight in family and local communities are also mentioned.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge:

After completing the course, the student should be able to

- hold knowledge about general practice thinking and methods

- hold knowledge about the tasks and responsibilities of the general practitioner as a family doctor and in public health care

- hold knowledge about the people¿s life cycle and consequences for health

- hold knowledge about the most normal sudden and chronic diseases, as well as frequent symptoms in a non-selected patient population

- hold knowledge about effective measures to promote health and prevent disease and failure of functionality

- hold knowledge about special needs in vulnerable groups

 

Skills:

After completing the course, the student should be able to

- master patient centered consultation where clinical communication, construction of the consultation and the doctor-patient relationship is essential

- make a good anamnesis and perform a clinical examination in different subject areas

- clarify early, non-differentiated stages of disease and make decisions considering simple conditions that may be finally treated in general practice

- follow up adequate treatment of those conditions that are normally treated in general practice

- involve patients and relatives in the diagnostic process, and in the plan for treatment and continuous observation

 

General skills:

After completing the course, the student should be able to

- understand general practice as an low-threshold offer for any kind of health problem, and the general practitioners role as a coordinator of different health services based on the continuity of the doctor-patient relationship

- understand the importance of combining medical knowledge with contextual knowledge, respect for the patients own experiences and resources as a basis for versatile health care

- understand and participate in the interaction between different parts of primary health care and specialist health care, when handling patients with different problems

- hold knowledge and reflect over normal ethical problems doctors meet in general practice

- understand and reflect over the fallibility of medicine and his/her own fallibles

Teaching Methods and Extent of Organized Teaching

Student centered teaching based on dialogue, reflection, and personal experiences.

- 20 days of work placement

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance

Work placement with a general practitioner (four weeks) with compulsory hand-ins after the placement. The workbook from the placement must be approved to attend the exam.

Consultation course (two days), video consultation during the work placement, and review of the video consultation in groups after the placement.

Forms of Assessment

Teaching methods and assessment methods are adjusted to fit each other.

 

The students knowledge, skills, attitudes and clinical competence are tested by written (case based) or oral (consultation) exam in the sixth year of study. External censors are used.
