Teaching semester

Autumn/Spring. Limited capacity.

Objectives and Content

The course is suitable for students that either have a good background in chemistry from upper secondary school, or have taken the course KJEM100. Chemistry is the study of the structure, properties and reactions of matter. This subject uses a physical perspective to introduce these three aspects of chemistry, combined with numerous examples from everyday life, industry and nature. Some of the topics covered are state functions, energy and enthalpy, entropy, the Nernst equation, electrochemistry, the properties of solutions, states of matter, kinetics and nuclear chemistry. The course contains a laboratory course that illustrates parts of the theoretical curriculum.

Learning Outcomes

After having completed the course KJEM110 the student is able to

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance

Laboratory course with a written journal. One mandatory written exercise (valid for six following semester).

The students must participate and pass a course on Health, Environment and Safety.

Forms of Assessment

The portfolio assessment is based on a laboratory course (pass/fail), mandatory written exercise (pass/fail), a midterm exam (2h) (accounts for 30% of the final grade), and a final written exam (4h) (70%).

Supplementary exam-regulations:

1. The laboratory course and mandatory written excercise are valid the 6 following semesters.

2. Midterm exam and the final written exam are only valid in the same semester as they are taken.

3. In semesters with teaching:

a. Students without approved laboratory course and approved mandatory written exercise from previously semesters must participate in the portfolio assessment.

b. Students with approved laboratory course and approved mandatory written exercise from previously semesters can

Either

i. Participate in the portfolio assessment, and thus take both the midterm exam and the final exam, which will account for 30% and 70% of the grade, respectively. Also the mandatory written exercise must be done. Students who choose this option must inform the Department of Chemistry before the deadline for exam registration.

Or

ii. Participate only in the finale exam, which then will account for the grade alone.
Examination supporting materials during the exam: Non-programmable calculator, according to permitted model listed in Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences regulations.
Compulsory work must be submitted within the given deadlines for the course. Approval of the compulsory work is necessary to get admittance to the written exam.

Grading Scale

The grading scale used is A to F. Grade A is the highest passing grade in the grading scale, grade F is a fail.
