Objectives and Content

The course intends to give Master and PhD students with a non-medical background an introduction to human pathology. It starts with an overview of the general principles of cell damage, inflammation and tissue repair. The second part of the course concentrates on biological and genetic mechanisms behind cancer development. In the third part, diseases of specific organ systems are discussed with an emphasis on tumours. Aim and Content of the Course Unit

The course intends to give Master and PhD students with a non-medical background an introduction to human pathology. It is divided in three parts, starting with an overview of general pathological tissue processes such as cell injury, inflammation and repair. The second part deals with the classification of tumours and biological/genetic mechanisms in cancer development. In the third part, diseases of specific organs are discussed with an emphasis on tumours. The course will be useful for all students conducting research on aspects of human biology, in particular those with cancer-related projects.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course unit, the student should comprehend the general principles of disease and of biological and genetic processes involved in cancer development. The student should also be able to describe the most important diseases of selected organs.
