Objectives:

The main objective is to introduce students to the Development Practice arena first and foremost as a field of practice, but also as a research subject and as the object of critical scholarship. The course builds on the students¿ prior knowledge of development scholarship generally (the first semester), and an introductory course in Development at the master¿s level is a prerequisite.

Content:

The main themes are (1) different analytical perspectives on development practice (2) empowerment and enhanced resilience as main aims of development practice; (3) participatory methods of development practice, with a strong emphasis on methods to facilitate development cooperation at the local community, regional and national levels; (4) contemporary initiatives for development such as UN-coordinated global frameworks for development cooperation.

On completion of this course the students should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge:

The student has in-depth knowledge of:

• Development practice as the facilitation of collaboration across social sectors and across vested interests/values, at various social levels from community to society;
• The natures of `community';
• Different perspectives on development practice, including human rights perspectives , gender perspectives, risk and resources perspectives and integral ecology approaches(equal attention to, and respect for, environmental, economic and social ecology)
• Cultural aspects of development practice

Skills:

The student has the ability to

•  Conduct community needs and assets mapping
• Negotiate: align, optimise and orchestrate diverging perspectives on community needs, priorities and resources (citizens', local officials', regional, national and global authorities')
• Communicate to colleagues and to community groups and representatives about methods and approaches to development practice
• Facilitate communities in developing, implementing and evaluating development strategies;
• Facilitate community-based participatory action research
• Locate particular development projects within local, national and global frameworks

General competence:

The student has the ability to

• Assist in establishing community collaboration,
• Respond to community priorities with suggestions for adaptive action
• Advise communities on actors and resources that are potentially available for community development,
• Help build, manage and evaluate community partnerships
• Work effectively across organisational cultures

Open to all students registered in Master's Programme in Global Development in the Health Promotion track. Open to master's students registered in other relevant programmes at UiB.

Teaching methods comprise lectures, group work and group presentations.
