Objectives and Content

This course gives an introduction to applied statistics for students doing research in geosciences and is particularly recommended as a supporting course in master or PhD studies. No prior knowledge in statistics and mathematics is required. Ordinary algebra will be used, and the use of matrix algebra will be explained. The lectures give a broad review of parametric and non-parametric statistical methods for analysis of both quantitative and qualitative data, with a comprehensive explanation on how the various methods can be used in solving diverse research issues. Special emphasis is placed on the analysis of spatial data and time-series data. The use of most methods is demonstrated through numerical exercises with relevant case examples. For the semester-assignment reports, it is recommended that the students use data from their own master or PhD research projects.

Learning Outcomes

After completion of the course GEOV301, the student should be able to apply statistical methods in professional research, which means:

- formulate geoscientific research issues as statistical hypotheses

- select an appropriate statistical method for hypothesis evaluation and perform the required calculations

- draw a statistical conclusion from the calculations

- interpret the conclusion with respect to the research issue itself

Required Previous Knowledge

Bachelor¿s degree in geology/geophysics or equivalent.
