The overall goal of this course is to give the students a theoretical background for further studies within applied seismics and seismology.
The subject provides an introduction to the basic concepts of theoretical seismology: Stress and strain, elastic properties, plane and spherical waves, anisotropy and attenuation, reflection and transmission at plane boundaries, surface waves, ray theory and diffraction.
The course provides good exercise within mathematical modelling of physical phenomena in general and seismic wave phenomena in particular. Emphasize will be given on mathematical derivations and implementation of relevant equations.
