After completing the course GEOV260 the student should be able to:
- explain the difference between source rocks, reservoir rocks and cap rocks
- explain how hydrocarbons are generated and expelled from source rocks, how they get trapped in reservoir rocks, and how their composition may be changed within the reservoir.
- discuss the most important methods utilized in exploration for hydrocarbons, reservoir characterization, reserves estimation, and production
- discuss the main types of petroleum basins
- define the main types of hydrocarbon traps
- define ´hydrocarbon play,´ with examples from the North Sea.
