Objectives and Content

The aim of the course is to give a fundamental introduction to the most central parts of physical geology, subdivided into endogene and exogene parts. Endogene geology deals with the construction of the Earth and how different processes work, while exogene geology deals with processes that operate on the surface (land and ocean) of the Earth. The teaching in endogene geology gives a short introduction to seismology, geomagnetism, mineralogy and classification of rocks, volcanic and magmatic activity, alteration (metamorphism) and deformation of the Earth's crust, as well as plate tectonics. Exogene geology deals with weathering, mass movements, erosion, transport and deposition of sediments, formation of sedimentary rocks, as well as the origin of different land forms. The teaching in this introductory course also deals with the most important natural resources such as petroleum, coal, ores, ground water, sand and gravel.

Learning Outcomes

After completing the course GEOV101 course the student should be able to:

- explain how the Earth is built and works, including all fundamental geological processes that have shaped the Earth

- define and describe sediments, minerals, rocks and how they form

- explain the main features in the Earth's history and their causes

Grading Scale

The grading scale used is A to F. Grade A is the highest passing grade in the grading scale, grade F is a fail.
