Objectives and Content

The course will teach French language structure, especially syntax and morphology. It will also give the students a precise linguistic terminology as a working tool. The course will also help train the students¿ ability to express themselves in standard French.

Learning Outcomes

The students will have a basic knowledge of the French language system and a certain understanding and mastering of a precise linguistic terminology. The students will have developed their ability to express themselves in standard French. The students will have gained enough competence to be able to further develop their knowledge, for example through the study of grammar at the 200-level.

Recommended Previous Knowledge

To complete the course with good results a level of French corresponding to at least level 2 from Upper Secondary School is necessary.

Access to the Course

The course is open to all with admission to the University of Bergen.

Teaching Methods and Extent of Organized Teaching

The teaching includes outlining lectures and practice sessions.

The scope is 4 - 5 hours per week for 10 weeks.

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance

The students will hand in two compulsory exercises during the semester. The exercises must be approved before students can take the course exam.

Forms of Assessment

The exam is divided into two parts:

  1. Portfolio assessment
  2. School exam

The two parts each count as 50 per cent of the joint grade in the course. The part that is passed is valid for up to two semesters after it has been passed.


Portfolio assessment:
The student will hand in two written assignments, each of about 1000 words, for assessment at the end of the semester. The subject for the assignments is given one week before deadline. They will be written in Norwegian (or another Scandinavian language). The assignments included in the folder will be assessed together.

School exam:
A 3-hour written exam where the student will answer in Norwegian (or another Scandinavian language). The examination can be conducted digitally. The students can make use of monolingual (French-French and possibly Norwegian-Norwegian) dictionaries approved by the Department.

The grading scale A-F is used, where F is a fail.

Reading List

The curriculum is a comprehensive French grammar book written in a Scandinavian language, where syntax and morphology are the main focus. The textbook is written with a contrasting perspective: great emphasis is put on the differences between Norwegian and French to ease the approach to the foreign language.

As an aid tasks in grammar are available on the Internet for the students to work on independently.

Any changes in the curriculum will be announced at the start of the semester.
