Objectives and Content
The course aims to give insight into English pronunciation and into central terms in phonetics and phonology. It also aims to offer a precise linguistic vocabulary as a working tool.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course the student should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:
Knowledge
The student should:
- have basic insight into the sounds of English, and on central analytic terms in phonetics and phonology.
Skills
The student should:
- be able to use this knowledge to analyse linguistic material
- also have a certain understanding and command of a precise linguistic vocabulary
General competence
The student:
- has enough competence to expand his or her knowledge, for example through further studies in English linguistics
- can express himself or herself in correct academic English

Recommended Previous Knowledge
It is strongly advised that students, in addition to fulfilling the general admission requirements, also have good grades in specialized English courses from Upper Secondary School.
For students with a background other than the Norwegian school system, a level of competence in English corresponding to C1 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages is recommended.
The teaching demands knowledge equivalent to EXFAC00SK Language and Communication and ENG100. It is strongly recommended to have completed these courses before continuing to study English.
Credit Reduction due to Course Overlap
Due to course overlap, a student cannot receive credit for ENG115 in combination with ENG101 (5 ECTS) and ENG112 (5 ECTS). The number of attempts on the exam is three, this includes attemnpts in ENG101.
Access to the Course
The course is open to all students with admission to the University of Bergen.
For exchange students:
Applicants have to document English language proficiency to access the course. Student should hold a level of C1 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Language (CEFR). For valid tests, please see uib.no/exchange.
Teaching Methods and Extent of Organized Teaching
Lectures and groups: up to 36 hours.
Students are expected to take part in and actively contribute to teaching. This expectation is also the basis for the preparation towards the exam.
Compulsory Assignments and Attendance
There are no compulsory assignments, but practice exams will be offered and it is highly recommended that students hand these in.
Forms of Assessment
The exam is a three-hour school exam.
The exam may be digital.
Examination Support Material
No aids are allowed during the exam.
Grading Scale
The exam is marked in the grade scale A-F, where F is a fail.
Assessment Semester
The exam is offered each semester ¿ the regular exam at the end of the spring semester and the re-take exam middle of the autumn semester.
Reading List
The curriculum is comprised of general topics in English phonetics and phonology. The reading list will be available by 1 December for the Spring Semester.
Course Evaluation
The teaching is evaluated in accordance with the quality control system of the University of Bergen.
