Courses: BMED350 Circulatory Physiology - Autumn 2017

Objectives and Content

The course content includes self-studies, lectures, laboratory experiments, assignments, and article seminars that cover selected parts of circulatory physiology. This course is designed as an introductory course at the Master's level, with the requirement that the student has a Bachelor's degree in the biological or physical sciences, but previous knowledge of the circulation system is not a prerequisite. Topics include: Hemodynamics, Interstitial fluid and lymphatics in normal and pathological conditions (inflammation and tumors), brain and kidney circulation, tracer kinetics.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge:

Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to:

· Display in-depth knowledge of the structure, complexity and function of selected parts of the circulatory system

· Describe commonly used methods in cardiovascular research and understand the theory behind these techniques

Skills/ General Competency:

Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to:

· Interpret and discuss scientific findings/experiments and literature in selected areas of circulatory research

· Discuss in a scientific manner the complexities of selected parts of the circulatory system

Required Previous Knowledge

A Bachelor´s degree in biology, molecular biology, biomedicine, physiology or equivalent.

Recommended Previous Knowledge

Basic knowledge of molecular and cellular biology and human physiology. Basic knowledge of physics and chemistry.

Access to the Course

Students accepted to the Master's program in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Bergen have full access to the course. Other Masters students at the University of Bergen or exchange students who fulfil the pre-requirements have access to the course after obtaining permission from the course supervisor.
