Objectives and Content

The lectures provide an introduction to the requirements for sustainable and environmentally friendly fishing. FAO's classification of fishing gear will be described. In addition, the construction and fishing operations of different fishing gear will be discussed and how biological requirements are needed to insure efficient fishing. There will be special emphasis on showing the importance of fish behaviour and response to stimuli as tools for capture efficiency and selectivity. Selection mechanisms in various fishing gear and methods to estimate selection will be presented. In addition to lectures, there will be a visit to a net factory.

Learning Outcomes

- Knowledge of how fishing can affect the fishing resources and the environments

- Knowledge of the main fishing methods/fishing tools used globally

- Be able to describe how fishing gear such as gillnets, longlines, trawls and purse seines are constructed

- Have a basic knowledge of the behaviour of fish to gear such as gillnets, longlines and trawls, and how behavioural and environmental factors can affect catching results

- Knowledge of the gear parameters that affect the efficiency as well as the species- and size-selectivity of gear such as gillnets, longlines and trawls

- Understand the methods for quantifying mesh selection in gillnets and trawls

Recommended Previous Knowledge

Compulsory parts of bachelor's in biology

Compulsory Assignments and Attendance
