The laboratory course is primarily for students who are in the master's program in Biology (specialization Microbiology) and require that you have taken BIO215 Microbiology.

The course gives an introduction to basic microbiological techniques and methods. Laboratory exercises give you practical experiences in enriching, isolating and cultivating microorganisms, and investigate their properties and activity, such as growth and metabolism (aerobic / anaerobic, gene regulation, and lateral gene transfer). Furthermore, it is granted introduction to microbial analyzes of environmental samples (water analysis) and methods for identification of unknown bacteria. In the last part of the course (2 work weeks) the student will be working with a project assignment related to one of the research groups in microbiology. The course will provide experience in planning, implementing, reporting and presenting scientific survey / experiment both orally and in written.

After completing the course, it is expected that students will:

- Have good theoretical and practical knowledge of basic microbiological techniques and working methods

- Have good practical skills in cultivation, isolation and characterization of microorganisms

- Have an understanding of how microbial experiments are planned, conducted and reported

- Be able to process data from microbiological examinations, and make necessary calculations

- Be able to present microbial examinations / experiments written and oral
