Objectives and content

The field of biomedical science seeks to explain physiological and pathological processes at a molecular and individual level. This provides a necessary basis for being able to understand disease and for developing new treatment methods and medication. The Master's Programme in Biomedical Sciences combines theoretical knowledge and practical laboratory work and provides the students with an in-depth understanding of biomedical issues. The theoretical subjects provide advanced knowledge about methods that are used in biomedical research and about cellular biology mechanisms. In the practical subjects, students lean to plan and implement research projects in an internationally active research community. Based on the practical work, the students learn to plan experiments, read and critically evaluate scientific literature, as well both oral and written scientific dissemination. The students are also trained to discuss the many ethical issues relating to modern medical research.

Required Learning Outcomes

A candidate who has completed the Master's Programme in Biomedical Sciences shall have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

The candidate will:

- have advanced knowledge about normal and pathological cellular and physiological processes,

-have advanced knowledge about biomedical methods,

-have a specialist academic insight acquired through work on the master¿s thesis,

- have a good understanding of the role of biomedical research in present day medicine.

 

Skills

- is able to plan and undertake an independent, defined research project in line with current norms on research ethics,

- is able to develop hypotheses and critically analyse methods and results within biomedical science,

- is able to produce scientific texts in accordance with applicable ethical norms,

- is able to present hypotheses and results both orally and in writing,

- is able to analyse and adopt a critical approach towards different sources and use these to structure and formulate professional arguments relating biomedical sciences,

- is able to explain the role of biomedical sciences in present day medical research.

General competence

- is able to apply knowledge and skills acquired during the master's programme in new areas in order to be able to undertake advanced work tasks and projects,

- is able to disseminate comprehensive, independent work and master biomedical forms of expression,

- is able to communicate biomedical issues, analyses and conclusions in a scientific manner, both orally and in writing,

- is able to participate in discussions about biomedical topics with the general public,

- is able to analyse relevant issues pertaining to specialist, professional and research ethics.

Admission Requirements

This Master´s Programme is open to self-financing applicants. You need a bachelor's degree in Molecular and/or Cell biology, Biomedicine, Physiology, Life Sciences, Biochemistry, Biotechnology or the like. You should have a minimum of 80 ECTS in relevant courses, including a minimum of 20 ECTS in chemistry or biochemistry and 20 ECTS in molecular and/or cell biology. Other relevant courses include biology, biotechnology, anatomy, physiology, medical laboratory courses, mathematics, informatics, image sciences, nanotechnology and physics. 

All applicants will be assessed individually. The selection of students will be based on the following criteria: 

- Depth and relevance of educational training

- Academic results

- English proficiency

- Year of completion of academic degree (should not be older than 5 years).

 

You need to be physically able to perform practical work in the laboratory in order to be accepted to the programme.  

For all students, admission to the programme requires that you are in upper secondary division or higher.

Compulsory units

Specialisation

You can choose to specialize within three different Biomedical fields: Human Physiology, Medical Cell Biology and Biomedical Image Sciences. 

In the second semester you will be able to choose from a range of elective courses according to your interest and the direction of your studies. In the third and fourth semester you will work on a master project within one of these three different specializations.

Sequential Requirements, courses

1. Semester

In the first semester you will attend two mandatory courses, providing a general, yet advanced biomedical basis for further studies.  

2. Semester

In the second semester you will be able to specialize by choosing elective courses equalling 30 ECTS. 

3. and 4. Semester

In the 3rd and 4th semester you will be working on your own independent research project, the Master's Thesis (equalling 60 ECTS). You will be participating in an active scientific community through daily contact with researchers and peer students. 

Shortly after the start of the semester we will provide information about available master projects at the Faculty of Medicine. You are free to look for a project on your own, but remember that all Master's projects must be approved by the Programme Committee for the Master's Programme in Biomedical Sciences.

Study period abroad

We encourage students to take parts of their curriculum at foreign educational institutions. The Master's programme in Biomedical Sciences is a partner in the Nordic Biomedical Master Network (www.nordbiomed.net) which includes four partner universities; The Karolinska Institutet in Sweden, Turku University in Finland, University of Eastern Finland and the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. You may go on exchange to take courses at these partner universities, lab projects and also the experimental part of the Master's project.

  1. a descending scale from A to E for passes and F for fail
  2. pass/fail

Access to further studies
