Objectives and content

The programme will provide you with a deeper knowledge and research training in important subjects within the fields related to international health. The aim of the programme is to provide research training as part of competence building in low income countries.

Admission Requirements

A first degree (bachelor's degree) of three or four years' duration from an approved institution of higher education.
Applicants must provide documentation of English language proficiency.

Objectives / Contents

The Master's programme in International Health is an English-taught programme offered by the Faculty of Medicine and Dentisrty at the University of Bergen. The Centre for International Health coordinates the teaching programme. The programme will provide deeper knowledge and research training in important subjects within the fields related to international health. A frame and a curriculum for the master's programme will be developed for each student and should preferably reflect areas of high priority in the student's home region. The programme is managed with assistance from the Master's Programmes in dentistry and health promotion.

Applicants must provide documentation of English language proficiency.

Prerequisites

The candidates must fulfil the basic requirements including good knowledge of the English language, according to specific requirements, for admission to the University of Bergen. A good Bachelor's degree level is required for admission. Candidates are selected from graduates of schools of medicine or dentistry, and from graduates of related disciplines of science or social sciences such as public health, nursing, nutrition, human biology, medical technology, pharmacy, social and behavioural sciences and international health.

Competence in the English language must be documented according to specified requirements.

Method

A Combination of lectures and individual studies will be used, applying both qualitative and quantitative methods, depending on research topic.

Instruction

The master programme in International Health is a 2 year full-time study programme organised for each student as individual programmes or appointed track of study and include courses, lectures and seminars. The students will be attached to departments according to the subjects and fields selected. The Centre for International Health will secure supervisors from the Faculty of Medicine, other faculties or competent institutions. An interdisciplinary profile of the programmes is possible. The programme may also be used in a "Sandwich" model: The candidate's
research is carried out both at University of Bergen and at the candidate's home institution . The duration of study time is divided between the institutions. The final grade may be given by the University of Bergen or by the home institution.

Thesis

The aim of the writing of the thesis is that you as a student will document knowledge of central research principles and to critically and systematically analyse different research topics and data materials.

Programme structure

The Master's Programme in International Health is comprised of two main components: a tuition part and an individual research project (master's thesis). The tuition part comprises of basic (compulsory) courses and a track of study or individual studies done in collaboration with the supervisor(s) (60 ECTS credits). The final year consists of research and preparation of a thesis (60 ECTS credits).

Specialisation

The Master degree in International Health is comprised of two main component; a tuition part and a research assignment (thesis). The tuition part comprises of basic (compulsory) courses and a track of study or individual studies done in collaboration with the supervisor(s) (60 ECTS credits). The final year consists of research and preparation of a thesis (60 ECTS credits).
