• can explain the main theories, methods and research areas in biology
• can acquire and use new knowledge in biology
• can cite key features in the development of the field of biology and its place in society
• has a basic understanding of the functioning of organisms, communities and ecosystems
• has a broad understanding of science and biology from molecular to evolutionary processes

Skills

The candidate

• can use evolution theory as a key to understanding the tree of life and organisms¿ adaptations to the environment
• can analyse scientific problems and material and use scientific concepts and models
• can use relevant methods and equipment to investigate phenomena and solve practical and theoretical problems
• can assess uncertainty in observations, theories and methods
• can use relevant computer programs to calculate, present, collect, store and report data
• can obtain and evaluate information and critically evaluate primary and secondary sources of information

General competence:

The candidate

• has a reflective attitude to ethical questions concerning research, practical experience and teaching
• can work alone and with others in a group
• can communicate scientifically in Norwegian and English

performs scientific work in accordance with good HSE practices
